Wow, is anyone else finding that the summer holidays are just flying past so quickly? They usually drag but this year has whooshed by in a flash. I’ve spent lots of time playing with the kids and stepping away from my laptop, which has felt awesome. Once the kids go back to school I will once again find myself staring at a screen… eugh.
These last few weeks we have been playing with arts and crafts, learning to ride bikes, taking long walks scrumping for apples, visiting friends and enjoying the weather. I have also been using this time to declutter the house, in an attempt to reduce what we own, keep things minimal and have less plastic in our house. It’s been amazing!
I’ve been reading The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying: A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever by Kon Mari. It’s a massive eye opener. When decluttering in the past (something that I like to do in-depth every 6 months) I would tackle each room at a time. Kon Mari takes a different approach and encourages readers to tackle each group of items at a time. Clothes, Paperwork, utensils etc, by getting every item from each group out and laying them out across the floor, so you can see exactly have much you have of each ‘thing’.
Once you have all of your belongs of that group in one place, it’s amazing to see just how much you own and don’t need. Kon Mari claims that once you have your house in order, you’ll never suffer from dreaded clutter again. And even though it’s only been a few weeks I have noticed a huge difference. Yeah, my house gets messy – I have 4 kids! But the amount of clutter in each room is definitely significantly less. Tidying is way easier at the end of the day and cleaning is a breeze.
I’ve even got the kids helping out. They’ve been choosing toys to pass on to the charity shops and various other places. I’ve taken time to explain to them that some toys they no longer need, or love and that other people can enjoy them now instead of them gathering dust all around the house.
Once the kids go back to school I would love to get their bedrooms decorated properly so each child has their own space and personal organisers for their belongings. Jimmy is still in our room. Soon he will be 1 and I would like him to be in his own room for his first birthday… maybe we shall all get some more sleep once he has his own cot. Ha!
I am going to wait until the kids go back to school before I have a huge deep-clean of the house. Cleaning is much simpler when there isn’t so much clutter to work around. The dusting can wait, as can cleaning the carpets.
What are your magic de-cluttering tips or is your home like a hoarders paradise that needs a good purge? Let me know in the comments.
