Brio Builders Starter Set – Review

Our kids are huge fans of Brio. They spend many hours at Nanny’s house playing with the brio train tracks. We were super excited when we were asked to review the all-new Brio Builders Starter Set. Ivy loves anything mechanical and we knew that she would certainly enjoy playing with this simple set. Jimmy is also at an age where he wants to play with toys such as this. Despite Jimmy’s Syndactyly, his fine motor skills are now being perfected as he loves playing with small fiddly toys. How could we say ‘no’ to reviewing this wonderful STEM toy that gets kids away from the digital temptations that surrounds them and playing with, what I would consider, a ‘real’ toy?

The Brio Builders Starter Set contains 48 pieces, including nuts, bolts, spanner and pliers. Included is also a booklet, with building inspiraton! Kids are encouraged to build whatever they can imagine from the pieces within the set. Ivy made a wonderful aeroplane and Jimmy had fun pushing the screws into the holes in the wood, as he’s now learning that things can be put together to make bigger things.

In true traditional style, this Brio set contains real wooden pieces that are durable and will last for years. The carry case and tools within the set are made of plastic but the plastic is tough and feels like it will not go brittle or be easily snapped by heavy-handed toddlers. The set comes in a lovely toolbox, that holds all of the pieces (and has room for more) in a compact place. Ivy felt just like Daddy with her own tool box.

This toy is aimed at children aged 3+ but my older child Willow, made an excellent helicopter and a car from this set. Equally my 1 year old son Jimmy, had great fun playing with set too. With very close supervision children as young as Jimmy can play with the set. Because the set contains small pieces it could be a choking hazard, but with close supervision I see no reason why small children wouldn’t benefit from playing with an excellent toy such as this. It really is a toy for children of all ages (and adults as my husband sat and played for hours too!). This Brio set has been in constant use since it arrived at our house. Unlike many toys which get played with for 5 minutes and then forgotten, this set has remained out and played with daily.

You can purchase extra pieces for this Brio set to make your set bigger. This is something that we shall certainly be looking at doing. All four of our children love the set but we felt there are not enough pieces for all of them to play together at the same time. I also think that this set would make a wonderful birthday present that family and friends can buy extra bits for to make their set bigger. Ivy will getting more bits for her birthday in a few weeks!

This Brio Builders Starter Set has an RRP of £16.99 and can be purchased from the Brio website and various other toy stores or Amazon.

*We were sent this brio set in exchange for my honest opinions and review. All opinions are my own.
