Ever heard that Old Wives Tale that for every baby you have, you lose a tooth? My mum said it, my nan said it and I’m sure the women in the family before her even said it! But is there any truth to it? Turns out… yes there is!
Research shows that between 50% – 70% women will develop gum problems during their pregnancies, and problems can be worse during the second trimester. I suffered from swollen, painful bleeding gums when I was expecting, both times around. Hormonal changes can make our gums weaker and more vulnerable to plaque (the grimey white stuff that makes our gums bleed!), this is called Pregnancy Gingivitis… or Gum Disease.
So what can we do about it? Look after our teeth and gums obviously! If we ignore a problem, it is only going to get worse. By taking simple steps we can reduce the risk of developing these problems.
So, what can us ladies do? The NHS recommends gently cleaning your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Use a small headed tooth brush with soft bristles. And obviously avoid sugary foods and drinks. If you do decide to have a cheeky Coca Cola ( remember that naughty caffeine content when pregnant) brush your teeth after! Avoid alcohol (One again, remember you are pregnant!) and stop smoking (OK you get the ‘don’t do it your pregnant’ message yeah?).
Since getting pregnant with my first, I have suffered with sore gums that often bleed. I am a smoker (stopped when I found out I was pregnant- with both kiddies) and I also like to drink wine (while I consume the wine I like to throw in some chocolate- we all do right?) So, in all honesty I am not exactly an advert for healthy gums!
Oral B, Pro-Expert have a new toothpaste available called Premium Gum Protection, which is clinically proven to reduce and prevent gum problems in just 4 weeks. I was lucky enough to put the toothpaste to the test.
The toothpaste has quite a gritty texture which definitely makes you feel that it is doing its job, removing all the bad stuff from your teeth. My teeth felt so clean after using it and I couldn’t resist that ‘run your tongue over your teeth’ thing that we all do after leaving the dentist! The product also works well at removing strong smells in your breath. I put this to the ultimate test by eating garlic and mushroom pasta, with garlic bread washed down with a strong coffee, the tooth paste freshened my breath loads and left my mouth feeling refreshed with its ‘freshy-ness’. It has a great taste that is not too strong, for once I used a powerful toothpaste that didn’t make me pull a face that resembles me downing a neat shot of vodka.
After 2 weeks of using the product, I had actually noticed a change in my gums. They looked less inflamed and where the gums on my bottom teeth has been receding and painful, I now experience no pain. I actually cannot wait for the recommended 4 weeks (improved gum health in 4 weeks the packaging says) to see what other differences I notice. An all round lovely toothpaste that makes my mouth a lot more happy and healthy.
Remember, dental care is free while you are pregnant, and continues to be free for the first year after your baby’s birth! Use it, Don’t lose it Mammas!
