Jays mum Sally had 2 vintage prams in her loft. A Marmet and a Silver Cross. When I was expecting Willow Sally told us about these prams and how wonderful it would be to get them back into use.
Last weekend we dug the Marmet out and set it up. Unfortunately the wheels had worn down to the rim and made the pram unusable.
I came home and found a lovely lady on Facebook who restores coach prams. I asked her for advice as to where I could find replacement wheels for the Marmet. She said she had some!!
Now this lady could have been located anywhere in the country, but amazingly she was only 15 minutes down the road from us. What were the chances?
On Saturday morning we went to collect the lovely shiny new wheels, took them back to Sallys and tried to put them on the pram.
Damn, no fit 🙁 We were totally gutted.
But… There was still the Silver Cross to look at so… Back up into the loft we went. The Silver Cross is a Tenby model, in green.
The wheels on the Silver Cross were also unusable as they were buckled. But *gasp!* by sudden stroke of luck, the wheels looked identical to those we just picked up a few hours earlier.
“Dont get too excited Hazel. They might still not fit” said Sally.
I ran to the car, got the wheels and *double gasp!* they were a match!
Click. One wheel on. Click. Two wheels on. Then three. Then four.
Oh my daaaaays, was this pram now useable? It seemed so. Someone upstairs obviously meant us to use this pram.
We brought the Silver Cross back home, gave it a wipe down with some home made chrome cleaner (lemon juice and soda powder), spray of polish and WOW… Shiny, beautiful pram. Cleaned off the mildew and put in some sheets (vintage too… They were older than me. Not that I’m vintage. Right?).
There is still more cleaning and polishing that needs doing, but unless you take a close inspection it looks pristine.
So, today we took the pram for a stroll to my nans house. Well, I was barely through the door before nan stole the pram and wouldn’t let go.
Long live the classic prams! Hopefully by getting it out of the loft and giving it some TLC we will enjoy many more years of this beautiful perambulator.
