I am not a vegan, nor am I vegetarian. But I LOVE drinking Oat Milk.
I am a breastfeeding mother, and the consumption of oats can seriously boost supply. I have never had low supply but I do like to express and store, so creating a little extra is always a bonus!
To buy oat milk in superstores can often be expensive if it isn’t on offer, so I figured there must be a way to DIY some up myself. A little head scratching and a few ‘trial and errors’ and I think I am onto a winner.
You will need:
- A cup of rolled oats
- 2-3 cups of filtered (or tap) water
- 2 large bowls
- A blender/smoothie maker
- A sieve
- Honey or Maple syrup to sweeten.
Start by soaking 1 cup of rolled oats in water, you only need to do this for 30 minutes or so but if you leave them soaking for a few hours, this is also OK.
Drain the oats and throw them into a blender (I have a smoothie maker and this works amazingly too) add 2 cups of water. Start by blending slowly and then crank up the speed to full ‘wizz’ for a couple of minutes.
Start straining the mixture through the sieve into a bowl, pushing the mix through. You shall be left with a pulp. This can be kept for thickening stews or even throwing into a smoothie. waste not, want not.
Keep straining 3 or 4 times to remove as much pulp as possible. If you want to sweeten the milk a little pour the milk back into your blender and add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup (golden syrup also works) and give it another quick wizz. If the milk appears too thick, you can just add more water to the mix and dilute it down until your desired consistency. I like a thicker milk, and nothing too watery.
Pour into an air tight jug or bottle and keep refrigerated. The mixture will separate when sat, so before use give it a good shake or stir. The milk will last a good 2-3 days in the fridge door… if you can make it last that long!!
