On Friday, We had the wonderful privilege of joining the team at Otodynamics in Hatfield, for Olive to take part as a baby scientist!
Ok, she wasn’t exactly a scientist in a white lab coat and funny goggles, but she was a volunteer testing instruments for newborn hearing screening tests.
My friend Stephanie had put this poster onto her Facebook page asking for babies, and I sent her a text letting her know that we were interested…. This was before Olive was even born!
A few weeks later, last friday morning to be precise Olive, Willow and my Father-in-law… Oh and myself, loaded into the car and set off for Hatfield. We know the area quite well as my husband used to live there back in his uni days. Turns out he actually used to only live a couple of roads down from the test centre that we were headed to!
At 10am we arrived and was talked through how the test would be carried out and how it all works. It was all very interesting stuff! While Olive was busy being a scientist (ok, busy laying on a table looking cute) we all took to terrorising the office! Stephanie and her dad, David Kemp (The MAIN man! He introduced newborn hearing screening, and is the developer of the instruments!!! We must give this man the highest respect!) filled the office with bubble wrap and boxes and let Willow and Stephanie’s little boy Asher run riot…. Along with my father-in-law, he is the biggest kid ever!
We had THE best morning, learning about newborn hearing screening, how it was developed by David and meeting these wonderful people who are true scientists, doing their very best to further science, and keep it going onwards and upwards to help newborns worldwide.
You can click here to the Otodynamics website to learn more, or visit their Facebook page. If you and your newborn are local and could spare a few hours, I strongly recommend considering it…. After all, its a fab day out, and you even get a picture of your baby scientist to take home!
Olive in full ‘Baby Scientist’ play-
Father-in-law Keith and Willow being mischievous in the office!
Stephanie, Willow and David playing with a HUGE box!
Me and Stephanie’s little boy Asher, he was just too cute!
