Who doesn’t love the sound of a ukulele?! They sound so fun and cheery, and no-one can resist a sing-along to a chirpy song. When my 6 year old told me that she wants to learn how to play a new musical instrument, the ukelele seemed like a great easy instrument to learn. Her Uncle Rob is an excellent musician, and while the ukulele isn’t an instrument which he plays regularly, he was more than happy to give Willow a couple of lessons to start her off. Willow is now the proud owner of a Jazwares My First Discovery Ukulele from Smyths Toys Superstores.
My First Discovery Ukulele Review
Jazwares have created a wonderful Ukulele for children, as a starter instrument for their My First Discovery range. It is aimed at children aged 8 plus, but Willow already has a basic knowledge of playing the guitar (thanks to daddy and her uncle), so she was eager to give the ukulele a go! The ukulele is a traditional soprano sized ukulele with easy to play nylon strings.
This ukulele isn’t a plasticy toy, it is a proper instrument which makes it ideal for children who are serious about learning how to play the ukulele. The ukulele feels well made and strong, and looks beautiful with such lovely patterns.
We have the blue ukulele patterned with stars but there also is a white one patterned with butterflies to choose from.
The only negative that we found was that the ukulele doesn’t hold it’s tuning for too long so it will need regular tuning, especially after heavy use. But, at least this will teach kids how to tune their ukulele with confidence!
Overall, this is a lovely little starter instrument for children wanting to learn how to play a musical instrument, or to try something new. With practice, I am sure Willow will be performing to her class for Show and Tell very soon. She’s been working hard learning chords and has started to make some of her own songs up. Youtube has been great for this, and there are some wonderful ukulele videos for beginners.
Where to buy
You can buy both the blue ukulele with stars and the white ukulele with butterflies from the Smyths Toys website here for £14.99.
