We all love getting into bed after a long day. A nice hot bath, fresh linen, cosy PJ’s and a hot water bottle makes this time of year perfect for making up excuses to settle down for an early night. It’s cold outside, and you want comfort.
Did you know that you will spend 20,000 hours on your bed over a 7 year lifespan*? That’s a long time. And we all know how important it is to get a good solid 8 hours sleep each night to function at your very best the next day. Broken sleep can feel adults and children feeling irritable, tired, unable to focus on work or school and even achy, from all that tossing and turning during the night. I suffer from a condition called Klippel-Trenaunay-Webber syndrome, and part of my condition is a large lump that takes up the whole of my right buttock cheek and the top of my right thigh. I never lay or sit straight because the lump is always in the way. Sleeping can be a pain and a challenge because I just cannot lay with my back straight, and I get sore very quickly.
Ill be honest, I have never really taking much thought about buying a mattress before. In the past we have chosen a mattress through cost alone. The cheapest option always being the only option. I am in no way a mattress specialist and I can only really recall around 3 mattress specialists from the top of my head. Not something anyone should really admit to when I recently discovered that we spend a third of our lives on one!
We decided to try a different mattress to see if something new would make a difference to my sleep quality. We were used to sleeping on a standard memory foam mattress. No special features, just memory foam. Many of us have been choosing memory foam recently, because it’s the new thing of comfort. You are promised that your mattress will mould to your shape and hug you to sleep. It’s true, memory foam does feel pretty awesome. I was wondering if I could find a mattress with the support and comfort of memory foam, but with the firmness of a sprung mattress.
The Vegas Smart Advance
Vegas mattresses have developed a mattress that at first glance ticked all of the boxes. It is a medium firm mattress with springs, but bizarrely it is also made with coconut coir and elastic Smartflex. Who ever thought that putting coconut into a mattress would be a good thing?! The springs deliver the firmness and the coconut and Smartflex delivers the soft, comforting ‘hug’ that I expect from my mattress. The Vegas Smart Advance Double (also available in King size and single) has several clever little design features. The springs are known as Smartpocket and are a reliable and hard-wearing pocket spring. A greater distance between the spring coils prevents them from coming in contact with one another when pressed upon, making sure that they mold to the body contours in accordance with your body weight, making the springs inside of the mattress last longer, thus meaning that the mattress stays comfortable for years to come.
Another awesome design feature which was cleverly thought of is how the mattress cover can be removed so easily for washing. Our old mattress cover could be peeled off with difficulty, washed and then peeled back on with even more difficulty. It took an hour and a lot of sweat to get the old cover on and off. The Vegas mattress cover has a zip which runs around the whole mattress meaning that you won’t be fighting to get the cover off and back on again. You can also remove one side completely at a time.
Simply zip off one half, flip the mattress and you can still sleep with come coverage while the other half is washed and dried. Then, flip the mattress and repeat. As a parent I was completely blown away with this wonderful little design idea. When my girls were new born, and I was breastfeeding, I often woke up with wet puddles of boobie milk. They have knocked over cups of tea, and they have even vomited over my bed (how considerate of them). Washable covers which are easy to remove is a must if you have children. TRUST ME. The mattress cover feels really thick, and durable. It encloses the actual mattress completely, and is a tight fit, keeping the mattress in shape.
The mattress also has an X Frame. A clever construction feature, made from an elastic foam material, runs along the perimeter of the mattress to stop it from sagging and loosing shape.
The mattress was delivered ‘as it is’, and not in a box. So make sure you have a clear space ready for it to be rest upon when it is delivered. Weirdly I was OK with this (even if my house has zero spare space at the moment due to decorating and we still have boxes to unpack!) because I didn’t have to worry about waiting for the mattress to gain shape and puff-up. Our last mattress arrived shrink wrapped and we had a while to wait before we could use it- something we wish we had known before chucking the previous mattress to make room for that one. Doh.
We unwrapped the mattress and laid it on our bed. Instantly I HAD to know what it felt like. Straight away I was star-fishing and stroking the new mattress. C’mon, don’t think I’m weird… we have all done it. Fact. After enjoying that ‘new’ feeling to the maximum, my paranoia set in, and I was worried that I would make it dirty. Even though the Smart Advance has a washable cover, my laundry pile is high enough at the moment without having more added to it.
With my nicest bedding in place, my little sanctuary was ready for bed time. We are currently in the process of stripping the wallpaper in our bedroom ready for decorating. We are hoping to go for a nice deep red colour, with soft glow lights. I don’t like electronics in the bedroom. Bedrooms are for sleep, not TV or computers. So, I like my bedroom to be comforting, inviting and personal. I can’t wait to show you photos of my bedroom once its finished. What I’m basically saying is ‘PLEASE ignore the state of the bedroom walls in these photographs!!!!!’.
Our first night’s sleep was lovely. I woke up a little stiff, but I think that was because I was not used to sleeping on a firmer mattress, and I havn’t done so in some years. Don’t get me wrong, the mattress was comfortable and I slept like a baby. To be honest with you, I may have woken up with a stiff neck because I slept so deeply.
Day 3, and we are both in love. My husband is also really enjoying the mattress and he is a light sleeper. He often finds it hard to get comfortable at night and spends a lot of time changing position and fidgeting. The last 2 night nights he has fallen asleep very quickly. Last night I had to kick him in the shins because he was snoring. He rarely snores, so the mattress must be comfortable. I am not waking up with as much lower back pain either. My bum and hips feel supported and when I sit up in the morning, I am not as stiff as I normally would be. Because of my syndrome, I seize up very easily and most mornings are a battle. My lower back pain is awful first thing in the mornings, but I can certainly see an improvement in myself just after 2 sleeps on the mattress.
This Vegas Smart Advance mattress costs £499.
