Technology is everywhere. We use it to go shopping, book holidays, keep in touch with our friends and now, it’s in the garden! As a gardener I often find myself googling plant names, looking for growing advice and uploading my favourite plant photos onto social media. Now I have an app for all of my gardening needs.
Candide is for anyone who loves spending time in the garden. Horticulturalists, head gardeners, budding young green-fingers, amateur gardeners, allotment fans, the urbanista, the pot-to-plate enthusiasts, house plant aficionados, I could go on! It’s like Facebook but for those who love mud. Post images, ask questions, share invaluable information and make like-minded friends.
The app is free to download onto your phone or tablet from Google Play and the Apple App Store. Once downloaded, create your account and you’re ready to explore the wonderful world of Candide. Thanks to Candide’s unique ‘places’ functionality, you can find localised information relevant to your interests and location, which is excellent for discovering local garden centers, open gardens, experts and stockists within your area.
Local to my home is The Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth- A stunning garden, with the added bonus of having a collection of areoplanes, motor vehicles, and huge playpark for the kids. A wonderful day out for the whole family. The app automatically picked up my location, told me that The Swiss Garden was near and gave me an aerial shot of the gardens, along with opening times, the address and even contact details (Facebook, Twitter, telephone number and email address). Easy to use, practical and very handy, the places tab on the Candide app will certainly be a useful and well-used button. Since having the app, I have already discovered 3 garden centers local to me that I had no idea even existed!
I also love that the app contains a comprehensive knowledge base featuring plants, pests, and problems- alongside ‘how to’ guides. You can use Candide to help identify plants within your garden, and each plant listed on the app has great in-depth information about each plant. Just tap the ‘Knowledge’ tab and explore thousands of plant entries. Catagories include; Annuals/Bedding, Attracts Bees and Butterflies, Bulbs, Climbers, Edible, Grasses, Groundcover, Houseplants, Perennials, Roses, Shrubs, Trees and Weeds.
Check out the Problems and How To tabs as well, as these cover pests and diseases and a whole range of interesting tutorials to expand your gardening skills. There are even videos to explore! So after you’ve done your gardening jobs for the day, kick back on the lawn with a cooling drink and read something new!
I really like the ‘Discover’ tab which contains lots of interesting articles. My favourite from this week has to be- Top Tips For Beginner Gardeners, Mythology and Folklore: The Elderflower and 10 plants Beees Love. Candide isn’t just another social media platform, it’s like a digital magazine too!
