We all spend ample time looking after the interiors of our homes to make sure that they are looking their best. However when it comes to the outside of our homes it can sometimes be quite a different story. Tending to the maintenance and development of the outside of our homes can very easily fall down to the bottom of our ‘to-do’ lists and over time they can’t start to look a little bit shabby and old.
When we moved into our new home, we knew that the huge back garden would be turned into an urban mini farm, growing vegetables and keeping chickens. The front and back gardens were extremely over grown and needed lots of work. It was a big job, but keeping the front of our house looking presentable has always been on the top of my ‘important jobs’ list.
Although we spend most of our time inside our homes it is still important that the exterior of our homes look their best too otherwise it can really let the rest of your property down. So if you have been meaning to roll those sleeves up for a while but are not quite sure where to start follow our top tips on where to focus your attention.
Start With a Good Clean
It might sound a little odd to someone who has never done it before, but the outside of our homes need cleaning just as much as the insides. There is a knack to cleaning the exterior of homes however so it not a job to go bounding into head first, without any planning. The best way to go about doing this is with a pressure cleaner. A pressure cleaner will get your home clean in no time at all, but you are going to need to get the right nozzle to ensure that the pressure is not too strong and you don’t damage your house. In the next few days we need to pressure wash the concrete path around our home, it’s surprising how green and mossy paths can get, causing a slip hazard in wet weather.
Enquire at your local DIY store about the different nozzles that they sell and explain to them exactly the job that you need it for and they will be able to point you in the right direction. Once you have the nozzle you are going to need to clean the house in a very cautious way. You will need to work around windows as you will smash them if you spray them directly and you will need to avoid pipes and drains otherwise you may very well knock them out of place. Once you have cracked the technique you can stand back and marvel at your home that will look as good as new.
Fencing & Home Security
There are a lot of homes that are still yet to put up proper fencing around their properties. Not only does this leave your property exposed to burglary but it can also make your property look a little unkempt and undefined. Therefore looking into the right fencing or railing solutions to go around your home is one of the best things that you can do for the exterior of your home. Look at the different designs by SHS Products to get an idea of the types of structures that would work best for your home. Getting proper fencing or railing all the way around your property will give you great peace of mind that your property is well protected and is looking neat and well kempt.
Our home is in desperate need for new fencing, and we aim to have this job completed at the beginning of new year. Our back garden has lovely new fences (after storm Doris decided to remove all of the old rotten ones for us!). Once we get new fencing for the side of our property, and repaint the fencing for the front garden, we expect the whole front of the house to look extra special and loved.
Guttering & Drains
Gutters and drains can create many different problems for our homes, not just from the way they look but also, if we don’t look after them properly, physically too. They are the worst places outside for accruing build up of outdoor waste over time. This obviously looks unsightly but more importantly can create a lot of practical problems for your home therefore they are very important to keep on top of. It is advisable to clean out your gutters and pipes annually to make sure that they don’t get blocked and create problems.
You will want to wear thick, outdoor rubber gloves to protect your hands as it is easy to cut your hands doing this job. Then using a good, reliable, sturdy ladder you can set to task clearing your gutters and pipes. Also, don’t forget to use a plastic scoop to remove all of the debris and use a plastic tarp to get rid of it all. Give the visible parts of the guttering and pipes a wash with hot bleachy water, so they look extra clean and white!
A Little Garden TLC
No matter the size, all gardens need a little ‘tender loving care’ from time to time. They are an essential part of our home, so if they are looking a little tired and neglected then you can bet so is your home. So whether you have a front or just a back garden, or perhaps you have both, you are going to need to roll up those sleeves and put some time into whipping your gardens up into shape. If people walking past see a messy garden, you can almost guarantee that they will assume the inside of your home is just as messy which hurts your pride… even if it isn’t!
The best place to start is always with weeding and deadheading your plants. Look at the shrubs around your garden and see which ones are budding and need some pruning and which ones have seen better days. Then give the grass a good cut. If the grass is very long, your mower will struggle, so strim the long grass down first before running the lawn mower over the garden.
Once you have your garden looking great again you should be aiming to do this once a month. Looking after your lovely plants and flowers will make sure that your garden is always looking its best and will ensure that your garden is accentuating your property.
Sorting Out Your Garage
Another outdoor area of your home that could be damaging the overall look of your property is your garage. Most homeowners are unaware that we should be replacing our garage doors around every 10 years in order to keep our homes properly protected and also to ensure that our homes stay looking modern and well cared for.
If you haven’t replace your garage doors for a while then you are probably best investing in a solid electrical garage door, if you’ve only ever had manual. Electrical doors are surprisingly one of the best ways that you can protect your home as a lot of burglars try to gain entry to properties through garages. Electrical garages, make that next to impossible.
Spend some time looking around the outside of your home in order to establish the main areas that require your attention. With just a little TLC and a couple of weekends of DIY you can ensure that the outside of your property is looking as fantastic as the inside of it in no time at all.
