Welcome to this month’s board game review, in collaboration with the Asmodee Blogger Board Game Club. This month we have been playing the fun party game, The Werewolves Of Millers Hollow.
We love a good game when hosting a party. You know the score; We’ve all had a few drinks, chilling out of the sofa and suddenly someone has the genius idea of playing a game.
The Werewolves Of Millers Hollow
Set in a small village, townsfolk are being haunted by mysterious werewolves. The game is simple, to eradicate the werewolves before all of the villagers are devoured by the werewolves.
Players are secretly assigned a character card. You could be a werewolf or a townsperson. Once you know what character you are playing, you will be under the control of the game moderator. The moderator is chosen before play begins and almost acts as the puppet master for the game. The best moderators are people who can bring an air of excitement and mystery to a game.
If you are a werewolf you must work your way through the villagers devouring them one by one, under the cover of darkness. During the day you must try your best to act like an honest member of the village.
If you’re a member of the village you must work together to discover who the werewolves are and eliminate them from the game. But be careful! As you may become a suspect yourself.
Some of the characters in the game have special abilities that will help with your task. There is a Fortune Teller, Hunter, Witch, Thief, Cupido, Little Girl and a Sheriff. Can they help you discover the werewolves and eradicate them before its too late?
The Werewolves Of Millers Hollow is a very easy game to learn. It’s one of the best party games we have ever played! The players can make the game as fun or twisted as they like, and it really brings out the characters of some people (especially if players have an A Level in drama behind them 😉 ).
The moderator of the game shuffles the cards and deals out the correct number of cards to all of the players. They then put the town to sleep by saying “Night falls, the town is asleep, and everyone closes their eyes.’ All players then close their eyes and the moderator will call for the wolves (or another specific character) to open their eyes and pick a player to devour or another act relating to their character.
Each night one of the villagers is killed by the werewolves and this player is eliminated from the game. The next morning the survivors gather in the town square to try and find out who the werewolf is. You’d better hope you have a good poker face as every one will be eyeballing each other!
After discussing their theories, the players vote to lynch a suspect,, who is then hanged, burned and eliminated from the game.
The townsfolk and the werewolves each have a chance to win the game. Townsfolk win if they manage to eliminate the werewolves. The werewolves win if they kill the last townsperson.
Be aware of twists and turns within the game. The rule book also contains some handy hints and tips for each player, to succeed in the game. Its worth players taking a few moments to read through these tips to enhance game play.
The Werewolves Of Millers Hollow is a great little game, that is so simple for anyone to pick up and play. We found this game perfect for parties and I suspect it will have a lot of action in our house of the Christmas period.
The rules are simple to follow and game set-up takes seconds. A perfect, fun little game. The box is tiny too making it ideal for travelling with or throwing in your bag when off camping or on holiday. Its perfect for when the kids have fallen asleep and the adults are sat around a campfire. In fact, the camp fire would make a perfect mysterious setting! It gets hilarious (and often irritating) when players start chucking around accusations and theories.
If you love the game as much as we do, you can even purchase many different expansion packs to make the game even better. There are many to choose from, including the boxed set; The Pact, which includes the base game and the 3 existing classic expansions; New Moon, Characters, The Village.
The Werewolves of Millers Hollow is suitable for 8-18 players, ages 14 and up. Game play is short, lasting just 20-30 minuets.
You can buy The Werewolves Of Millers Hollow from good independent board game shops or online. The average price online is around £11 but do shop around for the best price.
