The two go together hand in hand!
I tried growing carrots in toilet roll tubes last year and was a great success.
Using the tubes meant my carrots grew much straighter (unlike previous attempts where I even had them growing all spirally!), they are easy to plant out once the tops are showing eliminating the need for thinning etc and using tubes are great fun for my toddler. She loves filling the tubes with compost and I even let her draw on the tubes in crayon for added entertainment.
The great thing about using the cardboard tubes are that you can plant them directly into the garden or large containers, still in the tube as they break down into the compost.
Down side to planting in tubes is that you have to save all your rolls through the year or you have to beg your friends and family to save them for you… Resulting in some dodgy looks.
